What an AI Overview actually is
An AI Overview is a generated summary Google places above the standard results for queries where it judges a synthesised answer will help more than a list of links. It pulls from multiple sources, cites them inline, and — critically — it's drawing from a wider set of candidate pages than the traditional top ten organic results.
That last point matters for strategy: you don't need to already dominate page one to get pulled into an Overview. We've seen client pages ranking around position twelve to fifteen get cited in an Overview because the page answered the specific question more cleanly than anything in the top five.
The featured-snippet overlap nobody mentions
If you've ever optimised a page to win a featured snippet — the answer box that used to sit at the very top of results — you've already done most of the work AI Overviews reward. Both systems are pattern-matching for the same thing: a compact, self-contained answer sitting directly beneath a heading that states the question in close-to-natural language.
Write the direct answer in the first 40–55 words after the heading. That's roughly the length Google's snippet and Overview extraction tends to lift cleanly, based on what we track across client content.
How to structure a page for it
- One question per heading. Phrase H2s and H3s as the actual question a person would type or ask.
- Answer first, elaborate after. Resolve the question in the opening sentences, then add nuance, caveats and detail below.
- Use lists and tables where they fit. Structured formats are easier for extraction systems to lift cleanly than dense prose.
- Keep the page focused. A page trying to rank for twelve unrelated questions dilutes the signal for all of them. One tight topic per page beats one bloated page per cluster.
The schema that helps most
FAQPage schema is the most directly useful markup here, because it explicitly labels a question-and-answer pair in a format Google's systems already parse for its own FAQ rich results — and that same clarity helps the AI Overview pipeline attribute an answer confidently. Article or BlogPosting schema, plus Organization schema establishing who's behind the content, round out the signal.
Does this work for local businesses?
Yes, and it compounds with Local SEO rather than competing with it. A dental clinic's page answering "how much does a root canal cost" in a clear, structured way can appear in an AI Overview for that query, while the same clinic's Google Business Profile handles the map-pack side of local intent. The two channels reinforce each other; neither replaces the other.
What we don't recommend: chasing an AI Overview citation as a vanity metric disconnected from actual leads. For most service businesses, the map pack and a strong local page still drive more qualified enquiries than an Overview citation on a broad informational query. Treat AEO as an added layer on solid Local SEO and content, not a replacement for either.
